Third-culture African founder building brands (and a life) across the continent, in public.

Safety Playbook for Founders Who Travel

I'm a confident founder. That's just facts. On days when things are going well, I put on my favourite prints and go to work. On days when the challenges of running a business are getting to me, I put on my favourite prints for a boost of confidence. Fashion is one of the constants in my life, and how I show up in a room has always been part of how I work.

The rooms I've been in have not always been rooms where people who look like me have found themselves. I've been the only woman, the only Black woman, the only African, the only African woman. Being the only one can feel like carrying a whole generation on your shoulders. What eases that pressure, almost immediately, is what I choose to wear when I walk in. It's the quickest icebreaker I have, and I always make a statement.

A couple of months ago, I walked into a client's building in my Dye Lab boubou, and I have never received so many questions and compliments on an outfit. [Binja: confirm Dye Lab is a women-owned, Nigerian brand before publishing.] I once had a mentor who said: take what you do seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously. I live by that, and my outfits say it too.

The formula: Structure, Statement, Signature

My formula is simple. On that day, the Statement was the Dye Lab boubou print. My Signature, as always, was a red lip. The Structure was the work bag I carried my iPad in. [Image: the Dye Lab boubou, the Statement piece. Add the photo and a caption with the designer and print.]

Three questions before you leave the house

Before you leave home, ask yourself:

  1. Can I sit comfortably in this outfit?
  2. Can I walk in it without any hindrance?
  3. Can I present in it?

Bonus question: does this outfit say what I want the room to hear before I speak?

Build your own uniform

Once you've built your own uniform, you begin to move with more confidence, not only in your work but, more importantly, in yourself. I would love to see your work uniforms. Tag me on socials, @Africancocktail, so we can keep this conversation going.
