Fitness Roundup: January

January has officially come to an end and your girl was working it out. This body is not going to be the same by the end of the year folks! Why? Because it’s time I treated my body like the temple it is!

So, I worked out pretty much every week this month and this level of discipline began translating into some important lessons that I thought that I would share in a section called: the #FitnessRoundup. These will be musings on my most hard won fitness victories and lessons on this journey to a healthier, stronger and badder me!

This month I did tons of cardio – mainly on the treadmill but I also mixed in some yoga. Now, this African child is not a huge fan of yoga but I had to push myself to workout outside my norm. Cardio is good and all but flexibility? Y’all already know that is king … and so we stretch! This is my first lesson this month: balance.

  • Balance in all things. You cannot over extend yourself at work and expect your body to miraculously be healthy. There needs to be a healthy mix of work and play. This is where working out has had the greatest impact on me. I’ve been able to schedule time away from work to focus on my health. Yes, the emails will still come in and fill your inbox, yes your attention may be pulled away by notifications but you have to fight the urge to be constantly ‘plugged in’ in order to better serve your body.

  • Mindfulness – this is how I start everyday. Taking time to focus on the present. I start each day with intention and use both mediation and yoga to re-center and exercise mindfulness throughout my day. This practice has helped me become more alert and in the moment. I am not as attached to notifications popping up or feel beholden to my phone or social media. It’s been great pausing and really paying attention to each person that I interact with as I continue in my pursuit to be actively living in each moment.
