Act Like A Lady Think Like A Boss

When I was younger, the word boss was always associated with men – especially here in Africa.  The older I got, the more I realized that while men  were the face of who a boss was (still problematic), women  have always been bosses in their own spheres of influence.

I think of my aunt in Bukavu who has worked in NGOs and has been honoured by various organizations. She isn’t seen as a boss but all her actions sure do point to her being one!

I think more than ever women should continue to take up space and claim these same labels. I want my children growing up knowing that anyone can be a boss. We should continue celebrating the women in our lives and amplifying their voices so that the narrative of who a boss is changes. This is especially true in Africa where more girls need to know that they too can be bosses by seeing many women take up this space!

As we wrap up women’s history month, I want to encourage my African sisters, mothers and aunts to step out of their comfort zones and rise to their rightful boss statuses!
