Meeting the parents has to be one of the most nerve wracking times in a relationship. I remember meeting my ex’s parents (who are some of the best people I know) and I couldn’t pin down what I wanted to wear. I’m sure this feeling is true of all backgrounds but y’all there is something additionally stressful when meeting African parents! The combination of wanting to be liked, looking cute enough to represent your own family and also showing up as a worthy mate for their son – all but nearly cripples many of us when we get to this point in African relationships. Expectations folks … that’s the killer. But there is a way out!

I always stick to wearing an African print when meeting the parents. Nothing screams ‘Africa loving girl’ more than rocking a print from home. You know, a little something that shows the parents that you are still rooted in African tradition despite living abroad. Secondly, I always wear a black top. Black is slimming and also hides tons of spills. I always get paranoid that I am going to ruin an outfit and so my go-to is black. Save yourselves the stress people and just wear black. Lastly, I wear sensible shoes. Shoes that I can walk in … the first meeting isn’t the time for you to experiment in a new pair of heels! It’s time to rely on your trusty pairs that have carried you to this point. Heels that you know you can walk in! Don’t fool yourself and think that impressing them involves heels that you have never worn … don’t play yourself friend.
