Visa Requirements II

Last week I shared the first two general requirements when applying for a visa (here). I loved all your questions and feedback on the post and honestly this is why I felt this blog was much needed! People don’t always know or understand how difficult it is to travel when you are from a different country.

And my hope is that this blog is informative both for those who had no idea what travel for others is like and also for those who find themselves in my shoes: continually applying for visas for travel.

So let’s get into it! Generally, there are basic visa requirements that most if not all countries ask for:

  • the most recent valid passport
  • copies of current and previous passport(s)
  • passport photos
  • the completed application form
  • and in some instances (many in my case) the application and visa fees

Today we tackle the next two: passport photos and the application form.

1. Passport photos – now I can tell you from personal experience that there isn’t a one size fits all here. Yes, in many cases you can stroll down to your local CVS (drugstore/photo studio) and ask for passport size photos and those could be acceptable at many consulates. However, I do know that Schengen countries for example, have specific dimensions for the images. And the representatives interviewing you and receiving the documents will send you back if the images do not match their requirements. I have lived this life so you all don’t have to make the same mistakes! Listen to me – read through the passport photo sizes before you arrive at the embassy. Nothing is worse that being sent around New York city to find a photo studio that has to retake passport photos that you already paid for!

My pro tip: Save yourself the angst and just get them professionally taken.

2. Application form – embassies usually ask for one or two copies.

My pro tip:
I suggest printing the application and corresponding documents in triplicate. Murphy’s law is always at work folks! My dad taught me that it’s always better to be over-prepared than to be found wanting. Nothing is worse than leaving an appointment to rush out and look for a printer when in a different state (and are unfamiliar with the city). This takes up time and unfortunately can reflect poorly on you. Hence, it’s always important to be prepared with at least 3 copies.

Caveats:

  • these requirements pertain mainly to tourist visas
  • check the country’s website or call the embassy to clarify the complete list of required documents*
  • the list of required documents vary by region and country what I provide above are the main documents that about 90% of countries have as a common requirement

Disclaimer: I do not work at any consulate or embassy, nor am I in the travel industry. These are my personal observations and experiences. And as always, anyone applying for a visa should consult the country’s embassy for all required documentation and application procedures.
