Cocktails in Washington D.C: A 24hr Foodie City Guide

When people asked me what I was going to do in D.C, I said – eat, think and visit as many museums as I can squeeze into one trip. And so I compiled a list of what to see and where to eat when you only have 24 hours in Washington, D.C. This list is for the foodie and the person who loves the excitement that seeing new artwork brings … full disclosure, I’m not a fan of high brow art so the places I chose are all ‘approachable’ – no MFAs needed!

1. Brookland's finest

My preferred method of getting to know a city is by eating my way around and by seeing as many museum exhibits as I can. I have legit gone an hour outside a city to find a restaurant before. That adventure was well worth it – best Memphis BBQ I’ve had to date! So when this DC trip came up and I knew I didn’t have too much time in the city, I outsourced finding restaurant locations to social media, friends and the Internets.

My outsourcing of restaurants led me to brunch at Brookland’s Finest Bar & Kitchen. A dope, laid back spot at 12th Street Northeast, Washington, DC. I loved every morsel of food that I ate at this location. I mean the flavoring was spot on. The deviled eggs were probably the best I’ve had in years and lawd that Belgian waffle … I had a whole moment of silence as I savored every bite. There’s nothing like a good brunch spot accompanied by great service.

Now, I’m a tad particular as a customer – but I’m also a great tipper. So when I asked for off the menu items, the staff accommodated my requests and when they didn’t have what I asked for, politely indicated that they didn’t have it in-house. I appreciate kind, speedy and attentive service. Brookland’s Finest had it in droves!

S/O to @justesunshine for the recommendation!

2. COLADA SHOP

I love this Cuban inspired sandwich shop! Another location that I outsourced from my gorgeous friend Nadia. She mentioned the words – Cuban, flavor, delicious – Binja you must try it … and I was sold. In all honesty, she had me at Cuban.

Colada Shop located at 1405 T St NW, Washington, DC should be a stop on your list of must eat locations! If you are looking to grab a quick snack or a Cuban coffee, this is spot for you! I suggest ordering the empanadas and a sandwich to-go and I promise you will not be disappointed. The flavors and portion sizing are just right for a bite on the go! Check ’em out when on your way to a museum or in need of a snack for the road – Colada is your spot!

3. Nando's

There are places that I will always stop by for a meal when in town and Nando’s is one of them. If you have ever followed my Instagram stories when I’m in DC, this is a stop I make without fail. I’m not even exaggerating – I don’t know that I’ve been to DC in the last five or so years without a meal at Nando’s! It’s serious – like a heart attack serious. This is a place where I go and always feel at home. I’ve had Nando’s in Africa, Europe and now here. You know a place where you walk in and order the same thing – because it makes you happy? Yeah, Nando’s is my place.

This Nando’s location on H Street Northeast, Washington, DC is my favorite of the three locations the chain has in this city. The decor is out of this word! I love the exposed, warehouse – like feel. The mixture of the hard and soft is evident throughout the restaurant. I also am obsessed with the ceiling height and the artwork? Gosh, I love the pieces chosen for display. Ok, ok – back to the food.

4. Il Canale

Now, if you’re into late night dinners, this Italian spot in Georgetown is a must! Il Canale located at 31st St NW, Washington, DC had the most delicious pizza I’ve had in a while! I’m not big on eating food that I can get at home but when we stumbled upon this location, we had to stop by and enjoy it! I mean look at the ravioli … and the entire place smelled of fresh, herbs and pasta sauce. Yes folks, I was drooling before I even stepped into the place! The decor is also super cute and makes for the perfect date night spot – not sure if you’re squeezing a Bumble date in at the end of your 24 hours!

5. La Vie & 12 Stories

So I’m going to give you a twofer here: La Vie and 12 Stories. Now, this to me, is how you wrap up a day in DC: drinks, laughs and views. I spent the evening at these two locations with one of my favorite couples and some of my oldest friends. I always make it a point – no matter how short my stay – to meet up with at least one friend in the city before I leave.

This time around my friends suggested we meet at La Vie located at 88 District Square SW 5th Floor, Washington, DC. Gosh, I am obsessed with the decor at this location. I’ve been here before in the evening and I can assure you, day or night that this venue had the most beautiful aesthetics and tastiest virgin drinks! If you are looking for a place to unwind after a long week – this is the spot. If you are looking for a place to grab a drink before a flight – I would say – do it here. It’s absolutely worth it!

If you don’t make it to La Vie, get yourself a drink at 12 Stories located at 75 District Square SW 12th Floor, Washington, DC. This is restaurant and lounge offers the best DC waterfront views! On this particular day we had nothing but sunshine, blue skies … and a gorgeous golden hour once the sun began to set. This is how you wrap up 24hours in DC mes amours!
