The 7 Podcasts You Should Be Listening to in 2020

I commute 45 minutes to and from my client’s location, which means that I have 45 minutes to either get frustrated by Massholes or get some edification from some of my favorite podcasts. Welcome to my 2020 podcast line up people!

CULTURAL PODCASTS

This is one of my all time favorite podcasts! Hosted by Yvonne Orji (Insecure – HBO) and Luvvie Ajayi (Author of I’m Judging You). This podcast speaks to my very African soul! These two Nigerian women share their commentary on growing up in African households, what it’s like to finally ‘make it’ and all the in-betweens that aren’t really spoken of in African households – abuse, how we show love … y’all get the picture. If you need a good laugh but also want the feeling of being understood by cousins that you only touchbase with through a podcast, then this is for you! I stay laughing and yaasssing the entire time. How are their moms just like mine?

Demetria L. Lucas unapologetically shares her commentary on culture. Demetria – author of A Belle in Brooklyn – hosts this culturally necessary podcast. On her show, she legit says the thoughts that are in my mind. Thoughts that, if I’m being honest, I’m generally too afraid to share. Her fearless dragging of toxic males makes me literally holler in my car! I am genuinely a fan. Her commentary on tv shows makes me watch these shows so that I can either agree or disagree – we are usually on the same page! She is legit like the wiser sister that we have that just seems to know ish … you know? She just speaks on it!

Listen, I luh God and so does preacher Sarah Jakes Roberts who hosts this incredible show. If you’re looking for a podcast where you get to righteously drag folks and kiki with a big sis, then this one is for you. Sarah speaks on cultural happenings but from a righteous perspective. She wraps up the show with a ‘snack’ – a quick word for the week. This podcast is filled with loads of laughs, catch phrases and leaves you feeling like you are part of a crew – Mind Your Business Ministry – to be exact!

Current Affairs PODCASTS

There is so much news yet so little time to actually consume it! To this end I have Alexa play Up First – a news show that synthesizes the news into a 10 minute segment. It gives you just enough to stay informed without being overwhelmedI highly recommend this podcast if you are on the go but don’t have time for a full segment on CNN or BBC.

This podcast is what happens when a news show meets comedy. The cast has some of my favorite comedians like Alonzo Bodden and Maz Jobrani … the atmosphere is set by one of the most famous voices on radio Bill Kurtis, and weekly this crew makes podcast magic! I leave informed – and it doesn’t hurt that I laughed all through the segment. If you’re over the sad timber that the news carries, this show is for you.

I’ve been a huge fan of this podcast for a long time. I’m no economist but after an episode on the chicken tax – I leave feeling like I majored in Econ … or at least know enough to be dangerous! I love learning and when you have 45 minutes to kill – this podcast is the perfect way to ignore traffic and learn something new.

Mental Health PODCASTS

Last year I decided to fully commit to my mental well being. I was stressed at work and well, this is the one podcast that I listen to when I need to reset. The perspective of a black woman that permeates throughout the podcast is refreshing and speaks to me! You want a podcast that addresses mental health issues within a cultural context by hosts who are just real about the struggle that it is to be mentally healthy in 2020, then this podcast is for you!
