Traditional African Wedding

Day 27

Love, dancing, singing, talking, music blaring, food overflowing, the most vibrantly colored outfits: these are the makings of a great traditional African wedding. Imagine a party where you are celebrating the happy couple as well as their family and their extended family all while seeing the most remarkable fashion on display! In Africa, as in many parts of the world, a wedding brings together two families into a single unit. This joining is not taken lightly as evidenced by the days of celebration dedicated to commemorating this union. Africans take this celebration(s) to the max.

When dressing up for a traditional African wedding, I usually go by the colors or African print of the family that invited. For example, in Nigeria, this matching is called asoebi. It’s how you identify who is part of the groom’s family and friends and who is part of the bride’s. In some instances, I know both the bride and groom and so I go for mixing the African prints that represent both families.

I have worn African prints here, here, here and here in this 30 skirts in 30 days series but I did not mix prints. A wedding gives you the chance to be more creative and flashy. The mixing of African prints allows you to express your individuality all the while staying true to the asoebi tradition.

Traditional African weddings offer tons of flexibility in styling. You can throw a pair of heels on as I did with this look or go for flats, which are more practical especially when expecting to be on the dance floor for most of the night.

I accessorized the look with this cute purse that I bought at a market in Ouagadougou, BurkinaFaso, some gold loop earrings and bracelets. I do not heavily accessorize at traditional weddings as I try to allow the outfit to take centerstage and not the added accessories.
