Sooo … it’s been about 7 months since I blogged and there is a whole lot to catch up on! As y’all know, I moved to Kinshasa in August 2020 and I have been incredibly busy since my move from Boston!
One of the main things that I found was how difficult it was to find a community where folks from the diaspora or repatriates could meet, commiserate, exchange information and engage in business. Being older and in a new city was incredibly challenging so I started documenting my journey in this new city on YouTube. Through my YouTube channel, I started meeting more of the diaspora in Kinshasa and honestly have made some incredible connections.
In reflecting over the last couple of months, I have come to find that it’s truly crucial for you to put yourself out there. I know people say that all the time but really what does that look like?
- invite people out – actually reaching out to people and saying hey, lets get lunch … not only waiting for people to invite you!
- show up at events – actually going out to these spaces. if you know there are events in your area, actually go there. don’t wait for an invite – go, show up!
- show up alone – honestly, it’s hard to be in a new city alone and expect to meet people so honestly sweetheart, you need to get out there – yes, alone. you have to go even if it’s just you.
- do it afraid – yes, putting yourself out there will actually require you to step out of your confort zone and push past your fears.
So, I’m on this journey and I will continue to do my best to bring you along … as well as share my learnings. I’m glad to be back with y’all mes amours 💋.
