How To Maintain An Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving is here and after 10 years of living in the States, it’s one of my favorite holidays. The generosity of spirit that most folks display around this time of year is what I love most. From strangers paying for each other’s coffee in drive throughs to an overwhelming number of volunteers at soup kitchens and homeless shelters, Thanksgiving brings out the generous spirit in us all. While these actions are great and laudable, I want to challenge us to do more. How did giving become a once a year event? How did giving of your time and treasure get relegated to the 11th month of the year? What kind of people are we from January to October?

This is where I want to challenge you. Giving should be an attitude. You should be a giver year round. How? I’m glad you asked. Here are some suggestions of how to maintain an attitude of gratitude year round:

  1. Find an organization to volunteer with at least once a month.
  2. Set up automatic payments to your favorite charities or non – profit organizations.
  3. Partner with an organization by participating in a sponsored walk or run.
  4.  Schedule time to share handwritten thank you notes to mentors, friends and family.
  5. Prepare a meal for a loved one … just because.
  6. Send flowers to express your gratitude to a friend that you reconnect with.
