How To Dress Like A Consultant

I’ve been a consultant for 7 years! I graduated with my master’s and I immediately started consulting right after college. I have had clients who had strict dress codes and others who had a more flexible dress code. Regardless of client, the goal as always is to be stylish, presentable and comfortable. I believe in bringing my whole self to the workplace (see my post on covering) and that includes how I dress. How I show up to the client’s office is not only a reflection of my employer, but it is also a reflection of me!

Bearing these goals in mind, I have come up with a couple of staple pieces that I believe should be in every consultant’s wardrobe:

  1. Tailored pants – I believe that every powerful woman should own multiple tailored pants. Tailoring is everything. Being able to show up in a pair of form fitting pants creates the perfect base for a look especially if the client’s location has a formal dress code.
  2. Statement blouse – I am a huge fan of wearing tops that show off my personality. I love being able to show my personality all while being in a work appropriate top. I picked this peplum top as an example of how you can show up stylish yet still adhering to corporate standards.
  3. Fitted outerwear –  I live in New England and the weather is especially brutal in the winter. It’s important to pick the right outerwear. My favorites include peacoats, trench coats, puffer jackets … just to name a few. As with the tailored pants, it’s just as important to present a professional look at a client location and ensuring that your outerwear has the right fit is very important – it’s the difference between looking frumpy and looking expensive.

4. Comfortable footwear – I have no idea how women in corporate America live in heels. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that there is a time and place for heels but more importantly, I believe that women should be comfortable in the workplace. If heels aren’t for you, then get some flats. I usually have a pair of heels on for half the day at work but I also have a pair of flats in the event my feet hurt. Comfort is king!

5. Fitted underwear – yes, you read that right. Binja, no one is going to see my underwear. I hear you – however, it’s important to wear the right underwear especially when at a client site. Panty lines, bra outlines … you get the picture, should not be detracting from a presentation. Additionally, when you feel sexy on the inside, you exude confidence on the outside!
