Cocktails In Windhoek: A Vacation Guide

If anyone asked me what my fave Southern African country is … I would at this moment, hands down say Namibia! Why? It really comes down to a couple of things: order (laws, sanitation, opportunity), the people and the location (can’t beat having two deserts and an ocean!).

So when you land in the capital city, Windhoek, where should you go? Allow me to show you the best things to do in Windhoek.

WHERE TO STAY

Avani Windhoek

I LOVE this hotel! The hotel’s location is in downtown Windhoek with access to all the conveniences you would need: malls, rental cars, banks, local artisanal markets … y’all get it – this location offers a whole lot! In addition to the location, the rooms and amenities make this hotel a must stay (even if you are a local – it’s perfect for a #staycation!). But what is my favorite part about staying at Avani Windhoek? It’s the rooftop pool and views! I mean this hotel at night is where I want to end all my nights. The bar staff are super kind and attentive and the management is also very responsive. Yeah – this is where you stay when in Windhoek!

So now that you know where to stay, here are all the places you should eat at when in Windhoek.

WHERE TO EAT

I like to eat. It’s really that simple. In my opinion, eating while traveling are part and parcel and Windhoek doesn’t disappoint! The home of the brave aka Windhoek has so many restaurants to choose from, which is why it was such a delight to eat my way around the city!

WHAT TO SEE

Windhoek offers some of my favorite city views of any African city!

  1. Christuskirche – one of the city’s landmarks referencing European architecture. Namibia has a complicated German history (colonialism) but you can hear German services on a Sunday at this church! They also offer tours, which I highly recommend!
  2. There are mountain top views as is the case when you visit Hotel Heinitzburg.
  3. Savanna views for days when you visit the River Crossing Lodge (incredible sunset)!
  4. Vinyls – is the coolest hang out spot! They host open mike nights, spoken word events – and have a full bar!
  5. There are also so many places to shop like Wernhill Mall or Grove Mall. I can’t tell you how much shopping I did (it’s great because you have a mix of South African and European brands under one roof!).

Where To Play

When it comes time to play in the city, there are a couple of options. Let me preface it by saying that Windhoek has lots to enjoy on the entertainment front.

  1. Vinyl’s for a cool vibe – think NPR tiny desk series  with a full bar!
  2. The Catch Restaurant & Lounge is another location with some of my favorite DJ’s! I love me some good Amapiano and the DJ’s there played song after song making my whole experience there so memorable.
  3. Chicago’s Bar & Restaurant – go to their outdoor patio! The DJ as amazing! All the latest African tunes with the most fun DJs! Theres nothing like a party where the DJ’s are always lit!
  4. Warehouse Theatre – super eclectic hang out spot. They serve great bar food and I believe have about three bars so drinks galore! Additionally, the DJs on deck were incredible! This is a great place to either start or end your night.

Where To Relax

I met an incredible African queen who introduced me to the concept of relaxation pre-flight, which is something I have come to adopt. So, when in Windhoek, Namibia, spend a couple of hours at Soulstice Day spa! The staff is incredible and very professional. My friend gifted me a Swedish massage and my masseuse was so skillful and did I mention that they were on time? Nothing like prompt service y’all! The spa offers the massage services, hyaluronic acid facials, steam rooms, restaurants and a lovely outdoor pool. You get the picture – it’s where you go to completely de-stress.

Well folks, there you have it! I’ve shared with you where to see, stay, eat, play and relax. Mes amours, enjoy Windhoek!
