How to style a skirt for a job interview – in a non traditional way – was one of the most requested looks from my Instagram polls. Many people around this time of year are looking to transition from one job to another and making that first impression in an interview is key. So how do you stand out from the sea of black, white and grey?

You pick a color that pops or find a print that elevates a traditional skirt and jacket ensemble. I picked a printed pencil skirt. A quick side bar: a pencil skirt is a must have in your wardrobe. I would say have at least three – one being a plain black and one being a printed skirt.

Once you decide on the skirt, the rest falls into place. If you pick a print as I did, the key to styling the look is to ensure that the rest of the pieces have a color that is in the print. In this case, the print has orange, black and white colors. I decide to pair the look with a white coat, a black top and black heels maintaining the skirt as the centerpiece of the look.

In the past (and in many traditional firms today) interviews beg for a more serious tone; however, as more innovative firms begin to spring up, the job interview is becoming more and more about how you brand yourself and what you wear to the interview is a big part of that effort. How would you like to be remembered? What adjectives would you like others to use when describing their first meeting with you? Vibrant, energetic, knowledgeable, open, warm, intelligent, skilled … that’s what we are going for! How you show up might determine whether or not you land the job so put your best look forward!

One of my favorite accessories to add to more formal looks are layered necklaces and statement earrings. These earrings are from a collection by Nicole Fichera, a Boston based jewelry designer. You should always carry a sensible bag. Not too big that you look like the bag lady but not so small that it can’t fit copies of your resume or iPad. As always I add my favorite pair of sunnies and I’m ready to seize the day!
