Job Interview

DAY 21

The interviewing process brings with it lots of anxiety and stress over not only the actual interview but the preparation for it. I believe that looking the part is definitely a way to help assuage some of the anxiety associated with the interview process. Half the battle is looking the part. Once you have that nailed down, your focus cane fully devoted to the question prep. So how do you select the perfect outfit that will boost your confidence during interviews?

I always ask myself three things:

  1. Am I comfortable in this outfit? There is nothing worse that wearing heels you cannot walk in or a skirt that is too short to sit comfortably in … if you can bend and run in the outfit you are selecting without flashing anyone and without your feet hurting … you’re on your way in selecting the right outfit!
  2. Is this outfit unique enough? You’re going in for an interview … half the time your résumé looks just like the rest of the people interviewing. You need to find a way to stand out! You can do this by having your outfit be the conversation starter. For today’s job interview look, I chose this pleated polka dot skirt. Its not just any skirt – it’s a block A line pleated skirt! The contrast of the green against the black makes for a gorgeous printed skirt and the pleats are so feminine! This skirt is sure to get conversations started and help you break the ice at an interview.
  3. Does this outfit represent who I am ?Authenticity is key in all you do. Part of showing up and doing a great job is tied to your ability to bring your whole self to the workplace. If you like to wear African print – as I do, find a way to incorporate a print in your work wear. I have done this by adding a clutch that was African print to a look or carrying a bag that was African print to the interview with me. I believe it’s only fair for both parties during an interview to be honest about who you are during the interview process. Covering (read about it here) during an interview  does not serve you as it robs you of the chance to really sell yourself on how unique an individual you are. So don’t cover! Grab an outfit that is authentically you and crush that interview!

This skirt is one of my favorite finds online! What do you think of this look? Drop a comment below or on my Instagram @Africancocktail.
