Day to Night

Day 3

One of the most requested looks for the series came from a question some of my followers on Instagram asked: how can we transition a skirt from day to night? The tricky part about this is that when most magazines or bloggers demonstrate how to transition from a day to a night look, it usually involves a change of shoes, outerwear or accessories. If you are like me, that translates to carrying more bags than a bag lady on a crowded train in order to make that transition – and that ain’t me!

I prefer creating looks that can transition from day to night without having to bring along any additional outfits or accessories. How? I’m glad you asked.

My cardinal rule with transitional pieces is always start with heels. Pick a pair that you can wear comfortably for the entire day. I like to pick black heels as black is color that can be worn with multiple outfits and complements other colors well. Secondly, I look for a coat – or a cape in this case. Always having a covering of some sort is key when thinking about transitional pieces. At some point you will be cold or may need something to wrap yourself in, and having a cape like this one comes in handy. Lastly, pick a pattern that can go from day to night. This black and white check style top is versatile for both day and night styling.

My favorite part about styling looks that can transition from day to night is the fact that it usually requires more creativity. These looks usually have me looking deeper into my closet and re-discovering pieces that I haven’t worn or put together in a long time!
